I have been working on getting rookie cards of Hall of Famers quite a bit this year with decent success. The shopping tools have been big help in helping me find affordable cards to send to players. Not only am I looking for the major issues, but I'm also trying to get affordable regional issues as well (very much inspired by the 1968 Jack in the Box Elvin Hayes card that jswieton got signed).
1965 Topps featured a few nice rookie cards of stars, so I have been on the hunt for their unsigned cards. IIn my searches, I found that there was a regional set from 1965 put out by Coca-Cola in Canada. This set was printed on very thin paper (much thinner than Topps) and featured most of the players on the Original Six teams from that era. The cards were perforated and came in team sheets - which I have seen offered a couple of times for pretty big money. Included are rookie cards of Phil Esposito, Ed Giacomin, Yvan Cournoyer, Gerry Cheevers, and Bernie Parent (in his only card as a Boston Bruin).
The prices on cards from smaller sets like this can vary greatly, but you can find deals if you are patient. So far I have been able to pick up the following 2 cards for about $5 each (before shipping), which will soon be sent out:
The key rookie card is the Phil Esposito, which I lost on eBay last night when a PSA 8 Graded copy went for $24.49.
I got the Giacomin card delivered to me today and there was a card also enclosed. At first I thought it was some heritage retro card of some new rookie I didn't know... but this was the dealer's business card in 1979 Topps form (I thought was clever and I wanted to share with you cards):
