Introducing Collector Groups Tuesday, March 11, 2008 Posted by jaygross Comments: 0
I'm excited to announce another new feature - Collector Groups on SCN. I used to run a rather large social network and developed similar functionality on it, and I think it will be a fantastic addition. These types of groups seem to be wildly popular on sites like Facebook and MySpace.
SCN premium members will be able to join groups focused on various collecting topics and create their own collector groups. Each group will be a place where collectors with similar interests can all join and share. Each group will have it's own message board.
So let's take a look at group I created. Many of you know my love for collecting vintage basketball cards and getting them autographed. Through this site, I have met quite a few other collectors who also share this interest. So I am going to create the "1970's Basketball Collectors" group.
In the community section, there is a new set of navigation on the left side titled "Collector Groups". Under that heading, I choose the Create New Group link and was taken to the form below:

I filled out a title, a description of the group, and some search keywords. When I click the submit button, a new group gets created. The screenshot below represents our new group:
The main pieces of functionality you'll find on this screen are:
- Information about the Group and the Founder
- The Group Message Board (where only group members can post)
- The Members of the Group
To join a group, all you need to do is click on the Join Group button (in the red box in the screen below):

Just like the Message Board on the site, each group will have it's own message board:

One of the really cool parts of this new section is the My Groups screen, where you can go to see all the messages from groups you joined all in one place:

As time goes on, we'll be looking to enhance this base group functionality. Please send me your feedback and suggestions.
